Re: Cheltenham Preview Nights
WHAT were your whereabouts on the morning of Tuesday, March 1, or possibly the evening of Friday, March 4? Were you at Punchestown racecourse and could you have possibly seen a Gangster batter and bruise a poor innocent victim who is currently vying for favouritism in the Timico Cheltenham Gold Cup?

Some eyewitnesses issued statements soon afterwards on betting slips and Davy Russell thinks he has solved the crime.

“There was talk coming in from a piece of work at Punchestown that Gangster had blitzed Vautour,” reveals Russell, prompting gasps from the intrigued crowd of around 650. “I was only schooling a few pointers but the horse I saw getting on the horsebox looked a lot like Vautour.”
Was it Vautour, Ruby? “I was in London, you needn’t bother asking me.” The banter has begun. Russell would stir up a squabble in a science seminar and he splits open plenty of atoms during the three-hour debate, which is overseen by Jonathan Mullin.

A crystal-clear phone call to Willie Mullins warms everyone up and the host from the Racing Post manages to get quite a bit out of him.
To sum up the call in a few sentences: Un De Sceaux is bouncing; Augusta Kate runs in the Champion Bumper but shows nothing at home; Vautour’s work has improved this week; Djakadam is where he wants him to be; Douvan is delicious. He doesn’t put anyone off backing Gangster and gives Bello Conti a favourable mention too. Blazer and Great Field are his best chances of winning one of the handicaps.

Mullins has nothing bad to say about Min and neither does Walsh.
“Min worked really well yesterday and his schooling went well last week too,” says Walsh. “He is a bit brave and he likes to attack his hurdles.”

The Post’s betting editor Paul Kealy is really keen on Altior, while Russell, who rides Silver Concorde, says he would be shocked if Tombstone was not right in the mix at the business end of the Supreme.

All the novice hurdles are dealt with first. Kealy points out that the Racing Post Rating of 161 given to Yanworth in January would be good enough to win 27 of the last 29 Neptunes. Barry Geraghty can’t find any flaws in him either but the biggest stumbling block could come from Yorkill. That is, of course, if he runs on Wednesday instead of Tuesday.

Mullin has read our minds. “Where would you like Yorkhill to go, Ruby? Supreme or Neptune?” Don’t get too excited – Walsh doesn’t bite. “What’s the point in speaking hypothetically? I don’t have the choice.”

There is absolutely nothing hypothetical when it comes to Douvan, who gets the thumbs-up for everyone.
“We love Douvan. I think he has everything,” says Walsh. Geraghty believes Douvan is different class, as does Jessica Harrington, while Paddy Power says his firm won’t be taking him on because he is so short and he’ll win, so it’s pointless.

Walsh believes there is a good thing in the RSA Chase. “I really fancy More Of That. He beat Annie Power. No More Heroes was unlucky behind Milsean and Martello Tower. I don’t know how you can be unlucky behind those two.”

Geraghty reports all to be well with the former World Hurdle winner. “He jumped six fences at Newbury last weekend – he jumped well and felt really well.”
Kealy offers the counter argument and says that No More Heroes’ jumping is “out of this world”.

Walsh reveals he will ‘probably’ ride Annie Power in the Champion Hurdle and says it would be one of the greatest training feats of all time if My Tent Or Yours makes a winning comeback there. Kealy makes a case for Sempre Medici, while The New One also gets a favourable mention.
Russell is having none of it. “I think you are all mad, making cases for Sempre Medici and this and that, and I’ll swing off the chandelier if Lil Rockerfeller wins it. The best horse in the race is Annie Power. She is a hell of a good mare.”

It is all about Un De Sceaux in the Betway Champion Chase with Walsh saying he is his best ride in any of the championship races. The panel can’t really find any cracks in Thistlecrack. Geraghty thinks he is the best banker of all the bankers and Paddy Power says he will go off odds-on.
After Russell proves himself to be an efficient auctioneer and manages to get a four-figure sum for a set of signed JP McManus silks, he reveals that no call has come from Michael O’Leary about the possibility of riding Don Cossack in the Gold Cup. Walsh says he keeps changing his mind about who he will ride as each day passes. Geraghty thinks Don Poli has the weakest claims of the leading contenders and Harrington opts for Djakadam. All agree that it it a fascinating Gold Cup.

Re: Cheltenham Preview Nights

Newcastle

Day 1

No decision on YORKHILL or BELLSHILL destination yet says Graham Wylie. Supreme or Neptune. They will split of course.
L'AMI SERGE goes JLT.
Pipey apparently "desperate" to get DOCTOR HARPER into the Handicap on day one.
Graham Wylie: "I'm not sure if NICHOLS CANYON has bottomed after his last 2 races but Willie says he's lively at home".
Nicky Henderson said to be expecting a big run from HARGAM in the Champion Hurdle on good ground.
Nigel Twiston-Davies yard are very confident about THE NEW ONE's chances. In best condition for years.
Mares Race: can't see past VROUM VROUM MAG.
BLACK HERCULES does go JLT.
Four Miler- NATIVE RIVER in headgear on good ground. Good value 8/1 or more.
NOBLE ENDEAVOUR well fancied for the 4-Miler. That's where he goes.
Novices Handicap Chase fancies for day one: MCKINLEY and DOOMSDAY BOOK offered from the panel.
FIVE IN A ROW offered by Danny Cook Jockey. "He'll be coming up the hill when others aren't..."
Wylie: KATGARY 2nd in Fred Winter 2 years ago. Better ground he'll be a chance in the last on Tuesday.
ALOOMOMO has been raced over Hurdles to protect his mark.

Day 2

The Neptune: handicapper rates LONG DOG and thinks he's well worth a place. Rated 148 in Ireland but 158 Britain same as YANWORTH.
BELLSHILL: 7f out he had nothing (in last defeat) Ruby Walsh told Wylie. Scoped badly. Fine and well at home now. Ready to go.
RSA: at bigger prices VYTA DU ROC, say the panel @NewcastleRaces
SHANESHILL "as of 4pm today" will run in The RSA. "That could change by 4pmtomorrow" says Wylie.
Wylie: "If I had a free fiver each way I'd have GREAT FIELD in The Coral Cup".
I know MIN is drifting in the market and the money is coming for YORKHILL but Wylie says Ruby Walsh rides MIN. I'll take the 5/2 MIN!
FOXROCK the class act in The Cross Country.
CANTLOW - "one to keep an eye on for the specialist Trainer (Enda Bolger)".
Wylie bought a French 3yo who Mullins sees as a World Hurdle long term prospect. Goes Fred Winter.
Bumper. AUGUSTA KATE.... Wylie's horse in the Masters syndicate colours owned with @antanddec and @alanshearer was planned for @Sandownpark
Right... Last 2 days to be discussed next at @NewcastleRaces #PreviewNight #Cheltenham

Day 3

JLT... GARDE LA VICTOIRE could go here and by @dickyjohnson77 only ride in a Graded race this #Cheltenham #madness
An observation from the tables: "some of Mullins horses don't go to the race that suits them best; they go where suits connections best".
There's a question over whether BLACK HERCULES likes Cheltenham - Wylie.
Pertemps: IF IN DOUBT mentioned a several times. LEAVE AT DAWN touted.
Ryanair: the rumours and counter rumours and contradictions continue re VAUTOUR. Ricci says he won't. David Casey says no decision made!!
VILLAGE VIC tipped each way by Danny Cook for the Ryanair.
WORLD HURDLE: COLE HARDEN will make the running and THISTLECRACK only danger will be going after him too soon.
MARTELLO TOWER and AUX PTITS SOINS offered as each way value. If going was soft look out for PRINCE OF SCARS.
Wylie says @PFNicholls is bullish about AUX PTITS SOINS.
David Pipe LA VATICANE need to be noted in The Plate. Has a penalty. If he gets in keep an eye on him.
The Kim Muir... Money for OUR FATHER "from some very good judges..."
The Kim Muir will be the race for SPLASH OF GINGE... Been geared for the race for some time.
UPSWING tipped for The Kim Muir at a decent price.
CAUSE OF CAUSES gets the usual mention....
David Casey of Mullins yard apparently says "She'll win at #Cheltenham and she'll win at Royal Ascot". LIMINI.

Day 4

APPLES JADE each way value in The Triumph Hurdle. ZUBAYR the main fancy.
Wylie... I was the underbidder for ZUBAYR. Willie (Mullins) really wanted me to buy him.
COUNTY HURDLE: CARDINAL WALTER "a big price" in a throw a dart race.
Wylie on IVAN GROZNY... He won't be mine next year. He likes to run with the choke out and let everyone pass him. He'll end up selling hurdler
"Wherever ANNABELLE FLY turns up, back it. With lots of money". Tony Martins.
Apparently Ruby Walsh says whatever he runs in he wins...
"BARTERS HILL is the one is take on..." Albert Bartlett.
Panel disagree and there's support for BARTERS HILL. UP FOR REVIEW will definitely run in The Albert Bartlett.
SHANTOU VILLAGE could get a nice toe into the race. He could see BARTERS HILL for speed up the hill.
Money steady for GANGSTER. Some decent bets from some reputable places for him.
Foxhunter: the record of horses going #Cheltenham #Aintree #Punchestown isn't great. It's a negative for ON THE FRINGE.
IT CAME TO PASS... Jim Culloty Trained. Good profile for The Foxhunters.
MARTIN PIPE: DELL ARCA might be a realistic hope for Pond House to finally win it.
Wylie offers another horse: BALLYALTON to go back over Hurdle. Martin Pipe hope.
JETSTREAM JACK. Looks the type trying to get a mark.... If the race cuts up and he gets in keep him onside. Panel. Martin Pipe.
NEXT SENSATION tipped for The Grand Annual. 2lb higher than last years win? Value.
Wylie runs SOLAR IMPULSE. He's not excited. "Wouldn't back him each way" next season he says.
Gold Cup talk....
"The best form for the Gold Cup is last years Gold Cup..." DJAKADAM.
If it's a good gallop on good ground (SMAD PLACE to lead) could see DON POLI lazily left too far behind.
The panel splits: DON POLI stamina and course and festival form. He beats what he needs to and does what he needs to.
VAUTOUR won't get home vs VAUTOUR will get home. Debate rages on. Only time will tell...
Wylie. In the CUE CARD camp. Of the Mullins menagerie Wylie goes DON POLI.

CHARITY BETS...
Danny Cook YANWORTH.
THE YOUNG MASTER...

Re: Cheltenham Preview Nights
RTE preview

Big Cheltenham preview night:
Ted Walsh,
@JohnnyBurke2
@gelliott_racing
Liam Nash and @BoylesportsLB -
follow @GameOn2FM @RTEracing for tips

We're just under way at our #Cheltenham preview night with @GameOn2FM - selected updates on the way

Gordon Elliott hopes to have between 20-25 horses at the Festival, says it's "all systems go" at home.

Champion Hurdle

Starting with the Champion Hurdle and Annie Power, who has drifted since being supplemented earlier today.
Ted Walsh says the Champion Hurdle is wide open for punters but it's a substandard edition this year compared to recent editions.
Johnny Burke says the fact that My Tent or Yours is a keen goer and fresh from his layoff is a worry, but a pacy race will help "This is Cheltenham, not Lourdes" - Ted Walsh says it will be a serious training feat if My Tent or Yours can win the Champion Hurdle
Predictions: Identity Thief - J Burke + L Blanche, My Tent or Yours - G Elliott, Nichols Canyon - Liam Nash and Annie Power - Ted Walsh

Champion Chase

"Of all the divisions, the 2 mile chase division is really weak", according to Liam Nash, who fancies Un De Sceaux.
Plenty of love for favourite Un De Sceaux in the Champion Chase, more a question of what will finish second.

World Hurdle

Thistlecrack is a 'skimpy' price for the World Hurdle according to Ted, Alpha Des Obeaux the value according to the panel.
Ted Walsh goes slightly off topic to say Vroum Vroum Mag is the bet of the week in the Mares Hurdle #Cheltenham
Prince of Scars won't be featuring in the World Hurdle if there's good in the ground, according to trainer @gelliott_racing.

Gold Cup

Gold Cup time - Ted worried about Djakadam’s ability to stay on his feet, says he doesn't know what Ruby will chose but is a big Vautour fan
Djakadam is the horse Gordon Elliott is most worried about in the Gold Cup, will be surprised if Ruby isn't aboard
All the panel have questions over the ability of Vautour to stay the distance in the Gold Cup
Offered a choice of Gold Cup mounts, @JohnnyBurke2 goes with Don Cossack 'cos @gelliott_racing is sitting here'

The inevitable question - Gordon: Don Cossack is flying, better ground suits, may not use cheekpieces
The resurgent Cue Card is the "single most consistent chaser this season" according to Liam Nash
Gold Cup Predictions: Don Cossack for Gordon, Johnny and Leon, Cue Card each way for Liam, Vautour for Ted

Others

Supasundae in the Supreme Novice is the ride @JohnnyBurke2 is most excited about for the week.
Not much love for the "beatable" Min from our panel, Yorkhill may be the one to watch in the Supreme Novice
Douvan has what makes Usain Bolt so good, according to Ted Walsh: "He can run faster than anyone else"
Johnny Burke, riding Sizing John in the Arkle, says Douvan looks "beautiful" from behind

Panel pretty much agreed that Douvan and Vroum Vroum Mag will win the Arkle and Mares Hurdle respectively
Gordon Elliott says No More Heroes will run in the RSA Chase

Horse of the meeting: Johnny - Diego du Charmil, Leon - Desoto County, Gordon & Liam - Thistlecrask, Ted - Vroum Vroum Mag/On The Fringe

On The Fringe has nothing to beat in the Foxhunters according to Ted Walsh - "They're a bunch of goats"
Yanworth appears to be the panels choice for the Neptune Novice Hurdle, although Ted likes Yorkhill, who may run

"You're hard up for a bet if you want to have a bet in that" - Ted Walsh dismisses the Triumph Hurdle
Don Cossack and No More Heroes are Gordon's biggest shouts for the week, we all know his love for No More Heroes @gelliott_racing
"As sure as God made little green apples"
will go to a five-day festival, according to Ted Walsh
Yanworth, More of That, Barters Hill and Bristol de Mai named as the panel's English horses of the week.

Re: Cheltenham Preview Nights
Barry Geraghty

Supreme

Min is the horse everyone is talking about, but I wonder about his style of race. He’s very keen and he could get lit up by the occasion. He might not enjoy getting hassle up front either. There’s good chat for Yorkhill but Altior was very impressive in Kempton. He was a good bumper horse last year, his work was very good and he’s grown into himself. With good ground and a fast pace Altior can oppose Min and upset the odds.’

Arkle

‘Douvan is very hard to get away from. He’s very good over fences and is a very good hurdle as well. He’d have a great shout if he ran in the Champion Hurdle. He jumps well, he’s very measured and calculated and doesn’t take risks. He’s forward-going, has scope and oozes class. Douvan is absolutely impossible to oppose.’
Champion Hurdle

‘My Tent Or Yours has missed two years and it’s far from an ideal preparation. He’s been to Kempton twice and worked there, but you’d love to have had a run. He has proven his class in the past, and if he retains that ability he has a chance in an open race. This is a step up for Annie Power despite the fact she’s won the Hattons Grace. Nichols Canyon and Identity Thief are proven, while The New One has a massive chance if he runs to his best form.
‘It wouldn’t surprise me if My Tent Or Yours won the race, but we’re all heading into the unknown.’

RSA

‘No More Heroes has been very impressive in everything he’s done, but so has More Of That. He’s won a World Hurdle beating Annie Power so that’s a good level of form and both his chases have been in Cheltenham. It would have been good to get another run into him but he schooled nicely in Newbury last week so that covers that base. He seems in good shape and he looks well at home.
‘He hasn’t run since December but both his runs this season have been at Cheltenham and that’s probably the trickiest track in England so he was good and accurate in his jumping. He has lovely course form and will go well again.
‘No More Heroes who is no pushover, but I’m confident.’

Champion Chase

‘Un De Sceaux is the one they have to beat but I don’t know if that is a true reflection of the race. SprinterSacre is in great shape at home and has got back to winning ways at Kempton. NickyHenderson is a great man to get them ready and if Sprinter Sacre could return to within a stone of his best form, that would give Un De Sceaux something to do. He’s in far better shape than this time last year.’
‘SpecialTiara could makes things complicated for Un De Sceaux at the front and run a fast pace on drying ground. It could leave Un De Sceaux vulnerable at the bottom of the hill. There are no hiding places in this race. Sprinter Sacre is a superstar and Special Tiara is fantastic – These are the ones to trouble Un De Sceaux.’

Neptune
‘Yanworth is four from four over hurdles and continues to improve with each run. He’s a winner around Cheltenham as well and that was on soft ground over 2m 4f so stamina shouldn’t be an issue, and he should prefer better ground. He’s probably my best chance of the entire week.’
‘He has improved a lot since finishing fourth in the Bumper at the Festival last year on nice ground, and he’s got a fantastic shout. Long Dog will appreciate better ground and a step up in trip, but Yanworth is a deserving favourite.’

World Hurdle

‘He’d be an even shorter price if he was from a fashionable yard. His form is rock solid and his last performance at Cheltenham was really eye-opening. He’s beaten the best of them and beaten them well. There’s nothing to oppose him. Thistlecrack is head and shoulders above the rest of this field. He’s a good thing.’

Triumph

‘Ivanovich Gorbatov was very disappointing, but the ground was soft so we’re hoping that was the reason the edge was taken off him. We were very sweet on Ivanovich after his first win at Christmas when he beat LetsDance in impressive fashion, but it does throw in an element of doubt when you see a horse getting turned over like that. Hopefully we’ll get better ground.’
‘The way Lets Dance came home after being headed last time out was impressive . Cheltenham is a stiff track and a fast pace will suit Lets Dance. It could all pay to her strengths and she could be the each-way value at 12/1.’

Gold Cup

‘You can forgive Don Cossack the fall at Kempton at Christmas, because the track was probably a little sharp for him. He was entitled to jump rusty next time out at Thurles, and then he schooled brilliantly after racing at Leopardstown so that should remove any doubts about his jumping. Cheltenham should suit him a lot better than Kempton so he’s a worthy favourite.’
‘You have to have doubts about Vatour’s ability to get the trip the way he got collared in the King George at Kempton. This is 3m 2f around Cheltenham and you see a lot of horses getting found out.’
‘Djakadam is a horse I loved last year. I loved him when he tipped up in the JLT, he travelled so well two years ago in that. He was as big as a bull in the Hennessey when he disappointed, then he was still big as a bull when he won the Thyestes. He was second in the Gold Cup as a six-year-old which is a great run and then you can forgive his run at Punchestown. He’s a massive player.’
‘You could run the race five times and get five
